That said, some of the best anime of all time are melancholic dramas and tragedies that excel at making their audience full of tears. From terrifying horror to comedy that will make your sides hurt, this variety is what makes the genre so easy to get into. Zetsuen no Tempest is more of an action/mystery but I actually really enjoyed the romance subplot in it. Kyoukai no Kanata doesn't really have much episodes dedicated to a romantic subplot but it's done really well in the few that it does. While action-packed shounen animes often take the spotlight, the anime industry is more diverse than any other media medium. Steins Gate has probably the best romance subplot but you've probably seen it already.
